نظام معيار الذهب هو استخدام الذهب كقيمة قياسية للنقود.
ألغت البنوك المركزية إمكانية تحويل النقود إلى ذهب وبدأت تطبع نقود بدون وجود غطاء نقدي وبالتالي حدث تضخم كبير.
حاولت الدول معالجة التضخم باستيراد كميات كبيرة من الذهب ولكن توقفت عمليات الاستيراد لقيام الحرب العالمية الأولى.
تدهور الاقتصاد ما بين الحربين العالميتين، وبدأت الدول تسعى لإنعاش الاقتصاد فكانت اتفاقية "بريتون وودز".
في "بريتون وودز" تم الاتفاق على تثبيت سعر صرف الدولار الأمريكي أمام الذهب وتثبيت أسعار صرف العملات أمام الدولار.
بعد قيام حرب فيتنام تدهور الاقتصاد الأمريكي وقام الرئيس "نيكسون" بفك ارتباط الذهب بالدولار وبالتالي انهارت اتفاقية "بريتون وودز".
مع انهيار اتفاقية "بيرتون وودز" تم تعويم أسعار صرف العملات وأصبحت أسعار صرفها تتحدد بناًء على العرض والطلب وكانت هذه هي بداية نشأة سوق العملات.
وفي مطلع عام 2002م أصبح اليورو العملة الرسمية لـ 12 دولة أوروبية، ليصبح حاليًا من أقوى العملات العالمية وثاني أكبر حجم تداول في سوق العملات.
