النفط الخام يتم مراقبته والمتاجرة فيه كسلعة ، وهو سائل لونه أصفر يميل للسواد ويسمى " الذهب الأسود " لأنه شريان الحياة الصناعية ، وعادة يوجد في المناطق التي تسمى خزانات تحت الأرض ، العلماء والمهندسين منذ أن يكتشفوا منطقة جديدة من خلال دراسة عينات من صخور الأرض ، يقومون بأخذ القياسات ودراسة الموقع يبدأ الحفر ، ويزرعون هيكل يسمى ، هيكل 'ديريك 'derrick ' يبنى لإيواء الأنابيب والأدوات لرفع النفط من البئر المحفور إلى السطح.

فالنفط يستخر من باطن الارض بعد عمليات التنقيب والطوبوغرافيا .......وعند تحديد المكان يتم حفر البئر النفطي وعند الانتهاء من الحفر يضخ بهذه الحفر مزيج من الماء والاملاح والقش ومادة ترابية تسمى البيلون (مشهورة بحلب ) ولكن يتم اضافتها محروقة وتضاف للمزيج....وفائدته هي اخراج النفط عن طريق ضخ المادة وتكون هذه المادة ذات كقافة اعلى من البترول المستخرج
